BIRD journalist Dimitar Stoyanov has been arrested for 24 hours after he attacked a National Revenue Agency employee with a bladed weapon in the "Hadzhi Dimitar" district of the capital around 6:30 PM, endangering his life. Forensic experts commented that the act should be considered a threat and attempted murder, rather than just hooliganism. The clash between the former employee of the “Bivol” website and the revenue agency staff member took place in a grocery store.
The Ministry of Interior released a video from the security cameras that recorded the attack by BIRD journalist Dimitar Stoyanov, who was armed with a pistol. The footage shows him initially walking away from the man with whom he was in conflict, indeed turning his back on him, but then he turns around and pulls out the pistol, pointing it at the unidentified man.
The footage also shows a woman waving a belt over her head, pointing at the government employee (ed. note - this is likely Stoyanov's wife), and moments later a third man approaches them. However, the incident unfolds on the sidewalk in front of a building.
"In relation to the emerging speculations, we clarify that journalist Dimitar Stoyanov has been detained for 24 hours for hooliganism and threatening with a weapon. The detention followed a report to the police by a citizen," clarified the press center of the Ministry of Interior this morning. The reporter claims on his Facebook profile that he was attacked from behind.
Dimitar Stoyanov maintains an impressive physical shape, as he is a long-time competitor and champion in kickboxing and Sanda, which are full-contact sports. He has been a member of sport shooting clubs for years, and he regularly posts pictures on social media from the shooting range, where he tests his accurate aim. Supporters from the media guild add that he has been trained by some of the best self-defense experts and has mastered both combat techniques and the handling of bladed weapons to perfection.
Dimitar Stoyanov was born on September 12, 1980. He is an investigative reporter and is currently an author at Bird, which he founded together with Atanas Chobanov shortly before the two split off and left the “Bivol” site. In March 2023, the Prosecutor's Office released audio files revealing that the reporter had maintained close ties with Krasimir Kamenov-Karo, an underworld boss who was killed several months later.
