No One Wants the Political Marginals from the "Green Movement"

The former coalition partner of PP-DB – the "Green Movement" – announced with a pompous declaration that it will not participate in the upcoming early parliamentary elections. The statement reveals that they held discussions with PP, "Yes, Bulgaria," "Unification," and "We Are Coming," but lacked support for a "broad coalition," which, in turn, rendered their participation in the elections meaningless.

According to information from Flagman.bg, Daniela Bozhinova and Toma Belev’s "greens" indeed negotiated with PP and DB but made extremely unacceptable demands that did not correspond to their electoral weight, leading to the talks being delicately terminated at an early stage.

They were not well-received even by marginal formations like "Unification" and "We Are Coming," which believe they would fare better without the "greens."

Three years ago, the "Green Movement" managed to deceive Kiril Petkov, then a novice in Bulgarian politics, into believing they could provide significant added value to his candidate lists. Petkov, harboring sentiments for them due to his father Petko, boldly granted them 4-5 winnable spots on the list and even gave them a ministry – the Ministry of Environment and Water – where they acted as they pleased.

This apparently boosted their confidence to such an extent that, before the last parliamentary elections, the "Green Movement" left PP and ran independently, convinced they could surpass the 4% threshold. The result was dismal – 0.43% (9,333 votes) nationwide.

In their hometown of Burgas, one of the leaders, Daniela Bozhinova, failed spectacularly. Despite saturating key boulevards with her image, the entire list managed to gather barely 500 votes.

In a normal parliamentary democracy, a party with such negligible support would remain on the fringes of public life.

In Bulgaria, however, the opposite happens. Despite its low electoral weight, the "Green Movement" representatives occupy high-ranking state positions and make decisions about multimillion-dollar infrastructure projects of national significance, such as the "Black Sea" highway. For two decades, they have also sabotaged the entire winter tourism industry and business activities in resort areas.
