Taiwan is closely monitoring a Chinese carrier strike group located approximately 200 nautical miles off the island’s coast. The group, led by the Shandong aircraft carrier, is on a training exercise, and Taiwan’s defence minister, Chiu Kuo-cheng, said that the timing is “sensitive.”

The carrier group arrived in the waters southeast of Taiwan shortly before Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles. In the meeting, McCarthy emphasized the importance of arms deliveries to Taiwan, while Tsai praised the “strong and unique partnership” between Taiwan and the US.

Japan is also monitoring the carrier group, which it detected 300km from Okinawa on Wednesday evening.
